North America’s most advanced ATD certification lab is now located at FCA’s Chelsea Proving Grounds thanks to the successful installation of ATD-LabTech’s innovative ATD certification testing equipment.
Chelsea, MI – After a three-week installation and training period, Fiat Chrysler is now equipped with the world’s most accurate and repeatable ATD certification technology. The project could not have been completed without the quick thinking and clever solutions of Jonas Bartelt and Michael Kunkel of ATD-LabTech, as well as the incredible support from the entire FCA team: Mary Perrin, Brian Grenke, Bill Anderson, Jeremy Valentine, Collin, Jerry, Michael, and Cal.
The installation process provided several unique challenges that has better prepared the EUROAMERICA & ATD-LabTech teams for future North American installations. We are grateful to FCA for being the first facility in North America to install this equipment and allowing interested parties to visit and see the equipment.
We would also like to thank the teams from Barton Malow, Huron Valley Electric, and Sunbelt Rentals for all their support before, during, and after the installation. This was a multi-group effort and an exceptional display of collaboration among companies of varying expertise.
FCA will now be operating the safest, most innovative and revolutionary ATD certification equipment available on the market today. The PDC (Pendulum Drop Compression) Test-System is a series of test benches united in a single and compact system. This system allows the opportunity to simultaneously perform neck pendulum tests, foot impact tests, head drop tests, rib drop tests, as well as multiple pressure and pulling tests in a confined space. The Impact-Test-System is a rope-pendulum with a linear actuator, allowing speeds up to 9 m/s with a 14kg probe. This system guarantees a precise and reproduceable point of impact while being equipped with the only four-source velocity measurement system compliant with ISO/IEC 17025 requirements. The Impact-Test-System test bench is automated and capable of four-axis movements to easily and precisely position an ATD. The Flex-Test-System combines hip range-of-motion with torso flexion tests in one compact system, eliminating the need for two standalone systems. The Flex-Test-System comes with fully automated positioning and a reactive light grid to provide a secure space of operation and a maximum liberty of action.
